Driver Falls Asleep Behind Wheel of Tractor-Trailer, Crashes on I-80 in Brookville Borough

BROOKVILLE BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) — Authorities say a tractor-trailer driver fell asleep while driving on Interstate 80 in Brookville Borough on Saturday morning.

According to DuBois-based State Police, the crash happened around 7:52 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, on Interstate 80 in Brookville Borough, Jefferson County.

Police say 22-year-old Michael D. Torres Celi, of Newark, New Jersey, fell asleep while traveling westbound in a 2013 Freightliner M21 tractor-trailer.  The vehicle then struck a guide rail as it approached a left curve in the roadway.

After initial impact, the tractor-trailer went down an embankment and overturned onto its passenger side.

Torres Celi and his passengers—24-year-old Maikool Rodriguez, of Newark, NJ, and 49-year-old Jose Hernan, of Guttenberg, NJ—were not injured.

All occupants were using seat belts.

According to police, Torres Celi was charged with a traffic violation.

Police were assisted on the scene by Jefferson County EMS, Brookville Fire Company, Pine Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Bricen Towing, and PennDOT.
