Rick’s Racing Roundup: Rain Cooperates to Launch Season at Area Tracks

Despite unfavorable weather most of the week, the rain stopped long enough on Friday for Lernerville Speedway to get their 2024 season underway.

Despite the cooler temps, a good crowd filled the stands along with a full pit area for the first Fab 4 racing program of the season. The track was in great shape and fans were treated to some great racing all evening.

Defending FAST Series champion Brandon Spithaler continued where he left off last season and took the lead early in the 25 lap sprint car feature from his fourth starting spot. From there he would hold off track champion AJ Flick, who came all the way from 13th to challenge for the win. Spithaler would hold off Flick at the checkers by less than two car lengths for his first win of the season in the nonstop event.

In the super late model feature, it was Michael Norris and Alex Ferree putting on a show for the fans as they battled back and forth for the top spot throughout the race. At the end of the 25 laps, it was Norris in his brand new Rocket chassis holding off Ferree for the win. Colton Flinner, Michael Lake, and John Garvin Jr. rounded out the top five.

In the big block modified feature, it was another familiar face in victory lane where Garret Krummert scored the win from his eight starting spot.

“We were pretty good anywhere, honestly,” Krummert said. “I could run the top, the bottom, it didn’t really matter and to be honest if it stayed green I didn’t think I could get Jeremiah but he gave me the bottom and the moisture down there off of four and it was so good and I kept thinking there’s no way he’s gonna do this and he did and it let me launch and he was kind of stuck on the black. Great race, to come from eighth was cool.”

In the pro stock nightcap, it was Christian Schneider cruising to his first win of the year. Lernerville Speedway returns to action this Friday evening with another Fab 4 racing program with the first race slated to take the green at 7:30 sharp.

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway also managed to get their racing program in this past Saturday where the RUSH late models took center stage for the Herb Scott Memorial.

When the checkers flew, it was the Steel City Outlaw Tim Shaffer besting a field of 47 late models to take home the $4,000 winner’s check. For Shaffer, it was his second $4,000 payday at the track as he also won the sprint car season opener back on March 16 against the FAST Series.

Pittsburgh will be back in action this Saturday with the RUSH modifieds.

Tri-City Raceway Park near Franklin continues to make improvements under new ownership. This Saturday, April 27, the track plans a soft opening with an open practice for all classes. Grandstand admission will be free for fans and the concession stands will be open.

Gates open at 4:00 p.m. with practice getting underway at 5:00 p.m. and running until dark with a bonfire planned for afterwards.
